Pander Brothers Brief History
A Collaborative Identity
The Dutch born siblings, Jacob and Arnold Pander, are best known for their collaborative background in graphic novels that helped spark the independent comics boom of the 90’s with the groundbreaking, “Grendel: Devil’s Legacy”, “XXX International”, and “Exquisite Corpse” for Dark Horse Comics. After the release of their Pirate Radio and DJ culture-inspired Comic Book/CD companion, “Secret Broadcast” for Oni Press, they went on to co-author and illustrate “Batman: City of Light” and “Batman: Apocalypse Girl” for DC Comics. Their latest graphic novels include “Accelerate” and ”Tasty Bullet”, both from Image Comics. Called “A power duo of creativity” by SOMA Magazine, the Pander Brothers draw from influences in film, design, music, and fashion to define the unique visual and narrative style of their nationally recognized collaborations.
From Comics to Film
The Panders launched their professional film career in 1992 when the duo was hired by Frontier Records to shoot their first music video, “Light in You”, for Dharma Bums, which received play on MTV. The brothers also directed and produced Hitting Birth’s “Drive On”, the winner of the Oregon Cascade Award. Gus Van Sant recognized the brothers’ talents early in their career and invited the siblings to develop spec screenplay concepts to pitch in Hollywood. The Academy Award-winning director eventually utilized a story concept by the brothers for his Deee-Lite music video. They were also hired to concept design Van Sant’s music video for Jon Mayer’s “Who did you think I was?” The Panders gravitated toward directing ‘Electronica’ music videos, including projects for artists Jamal-Ski and Pistel that wound up on MTV Amp. This would lead to an “Electro Lounge” DVD Mini-Movie for Palm Pictures – a nod to retro erotic and noir cinema with its cheeky British title, “ Suck it and See”. The ambitious project led to Wired Magazine’s claim that, “the Panders have a knack for cinematic suspense.”
Expanding the Collaboration In 2000, the brothers shifted their focus to screenwriting and documentary film work. Both brothers divided their time between Los Angeles and Portland. Jacob formed his Portland based commercial industrial production company, Radius Pictures, producing independent and client-driven documentaries for companies including Oregon Iron Works and Gerding/Edlen. While Arnold, under the management of LA based Gotham Group, began shopping the brothers’ screenplays and graphic novel properties to Hollywood studios for television and motion picture development.
Making the Motion Picture
In 2005, the brothers focused their collective efforts toward writing, producing, and directing a high production value motion picture that would compete in the independent film market. This led to their debut psychological thriller, “SELFLESS”. Upon its world premiere at the BendFilm Festival, “Selfless” took top honors with Best Feature, Screenplay, Editing, and Supporting Actor – Mo Gallini (2 Fast 2 Furious, End of Days) and was regarded as, ”Stylish, Smart and Compelling,” by the Oregonian. Selfless was picked up for DVD and Cable TV distribution by LA based Lightning Media and E1 Entertainment for 2011 release.
Commercial Directing / Branded Entertainment
In 2009, the brothers turned their attention back to their roots in the advertising arts, producing a series of web videos for the Red Cross as a response to the tragic events of Hurricane Katrina. Since then the Pander Brothers have been on a forward momentum directing a number of commercials for the LG brand, including a 3D project. The brothers have also been leading the new interest in branded entertainment, providing high concept direction for narrative stories that drive a brand’s message in an entertaining storyline, including “Jon Deux – Man from the Future” for Panasonic.
Current Status
The Panders are currently working between Portland and Los Angeles, developing new projects for film, television and the web.
